Farming in the City Limits

ROCK HILL York County 4-H and FFA recently hosted a Farming in the City Limits workshop, bringing together urban and suburban residents eager to learn about small-scale farming. Several stations offered hands-on learning opportunities and expert advice on everything from bee keeping, growing food and raising small livestock in limited spaces.

Attendees gathered at the Applied Technology Center to explore ways to maximize their backyards, patios, and even balconies for food production. The workshop covered topics such as container gardening, vertical farming, and composting. Local agricultural experts also discussed zoning regulations and how city dwellers can navigate local ordinances to keep small livestock legally and responsibly. Many attendees found this information especially helpful, as rules vary by location.

The workshop attracted a diverse group, from families wanting to raise their own food to beginners interested in sustainable living. Participants engaged in Q&A sessions, swapped gardening tips, and even had the chance to plant some seeds.

One attendee shared their excitement: “I’ve always wanted to have a small flock of chickens, but I didn’t know where to start. This workshop made it feel so much more possible!”

By the end of the event, many attendees left feeling inspired and ready to start their own small farming projects. Organizers expressed their enthusiasm for the strong turnout and interest in urban agriculture. With such a positive response, future workshops on similar topics may be in the works.

For those who missed the event but are still interested in learning about small-scale farming, York County 4-H offers a variety of resources and programs throughout the year. Stay connected with their events to keep growing—no matter where you live!
