SHELBY York County 4-H youth recently competed at the Evin Evans Dairy Goat show held June 6 at the
Cleveland County Fairgrounds in Shelby, North Carolina.
Several local 4-H’ers that show goats attended. They all did
really well and they and their goats had a great time.
Cloverbud competitor Lani Valentine did exceptionally well. She competed
with her Nubian, who is a junior doe named Milkshake. Lani and Milkshake
competed in Peewee Showmanship and Junior Doe classes where she placed first and fourth, respectively.
Senior Natalie Estes placed fourth in showmanship with the Nigerian Dwarf doe named Medley.

In the showmanship classes, participants had to walk their goats around a ring, making sure not to be on the same side as their judge all while keeping their goat under their control and making sure to present their goat neatly.
In Junior Doe classes everyone who has a doe in the age category would
go into the ring and show their doe. They would stop and square up and
make sure to show the conformation of their doe to the judge. In these classes the does should be cooperative and keep moving along without a fight. The judge will then line them up in order of how she or he best likes them.
After this the judge will walk down the line giving a shortened version of oral reasons for why the goats are placed how she or he decided.
Valentine is part of the York County 4-H Pumpkin Pie goat club and Estes is a member of the Goal Minors 4-H Club and York County 4-H Teen Council.
