On Sunday January 26th, three members from the award-winning robotics team Excalibur visited a York County 4-H science club meeting to talk about their experience in robotics. The team was visiting from the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics with their robot “Danny.”

The team competes in the FIRST® Robotics Challenge and the FIRST® Tech Challenge. The goal of these challenges is to increase interest in science and technology in young kids and teens and to score points by getting your robot to perform tasks, Bansal explains.

The students who visited are John Banzon from the wiring team, who has been in robotics for three years, team captain and programming team member Arpan Bansal, who has nine years of robotics experience, and Ansh Dwivedi from the mechanical team, who has been in robotics for eight years.

“We spend a lot of time with the robot and we form a close bond with each other. I’ve known Arpan for four years and I’m very close with Ansh now,” Banzon says.

Ansh is also a member of the Fort Mill Community 4-H Club and participated in the South Carolina 4-H Engineering Challenge last year. This year he returned with the Excalibur team to speak to youth preparing for this year’s Engineering Challenge.

The team talked to youth about how they work together to design and create their robots. There are several teams that work together to reach their goals. Some of the teams include: mechanical, programming, electrical, CAD, and outreach.

York County 4-H science students were given a short presentation, participated in a Q & A session, and were allowed to drive the robot.
