NEWBERRY South Carolina 4-H held the annual State Presentations Contest Saturday, Feb. 1 at Newberry Technical College. Several counties of South Carolina had their own presentations contest earlier. The top contestants in the Junior and Senior divisions from each region went to the state contest. Twenty 4-H members from all over South Carolina were selected to go to the state contest.

In the senior division for ages 14-18, Mary Anna Childers of Cherokee County placed first with her presentation “The Art of Flower Arranging.”

Evie Martell of York County placed second and Hennelly Gavin of Lexington County placed third.

Avery Smith of York County won the junior division with her presentation about recognizing and responding to colic in horses. Liza Shaw of Newberry County placed second and Sabrina Lindsay of Spartanburg County placed third.

Senior 4-H’er Evie Martell says the Presentations Contest is her favorite 4-H event of the year. “I think the biggest secret to success is just to relax and realize you are in a room of people that want you to do well. Let your passion show through and get excited about your topic,” she says.

Junior Presentations Contest winner Avery Smith of York County also won first place and Judge’s Choice awards in her age division in the Horse Communications Contest held the same day. Staff Photo
